March 28, 2022 — Marist College’s Games and Emerging Media program has once again been honored by The Princeton Review as one of the top gaming design programs for undergraduates. The 2022 announcement puts Marist’s program on The Princeton Review’s “Top 50” list for the seventh year in a row. The list ranks top college programs for video game design based on institutional survey data, including academic offerings in game design, faculty credentials, and career outcomes.

Shared between Marist’s Schools of Communication and the Arts and Computer Science and Mathematics, students in the Games and Emerging Media program learn how to become designers, writers, programmers, artists, and producers. The program features industry experts and state-of-the-art facilities to help students become the game developers of the future and offers concentrations in “Technical Development and Programming” and “Design, Writing, and Culture.”

“Our Games and Emerging Media students work in a creative and collaborative environment,” said Dr. Jacqueline Reich, Dean of the School of Communication and the Arts. “They work on projects to develop their technical and design abilities, while also honing their communication skills. We are particularly proud of the program's commitment to ethics and gaming, and the social impact of games.”

“This unique program gives students real-world game development experience. I am really impressed by the professional-level games that students are making in courses like Game Studio and our capstone course,” said Dr. Roger Norton, Dean of the School of Computer Science and Mathematics. “Thank you to the Princeton Review for continuing to honor this fantastic program.”

Students of the Games and Emerging Media major have access to innovative computer and game prototyping labs, as well as audio/video production studios. Marist students regularly work with industry-standard tools, such as game engines, interactive narrative platforms, 3D modeling, animation, audio, and UX/UI software, and Cloud Computing initiatives in partnership with IBM.

“We are really excited that our student-focused, hands-on program has been recognized again by The Princeton Review,” said Dr. Karen “Kat” Schrier, Associate Professor and Director of Games at Marist College. “Our strengths include our interdisciplinary curriculum and inclusive community, as well as our dedicated faculty.”

Marist graduates of the Games and Emerging Media program have established careers at a number of gaming and media organizations, with graduates having gone on to design, develop, and launch their own games for popular gaming platforms.

The Princeton Review based its 2022 Top Schools for Game Design list on a survey of administrators at 150 institutions offering game design coursework and/or degrees in the United States, Canada, and countries abroad. The selection and ranking of schools was based on criteria that broadly covered the quality of the faculty, facilities, and technology. The Princeton Review also factored in data it collected from the schools on their curriculum and career services.

"We enthusiastically recommend Marist College to students considering a career in this burgeoning field," said Rob Franek, Editor-in-Chief for The Princeton Review. "Together with the other exceptional schools on our 2022 list, the schools have first-rate programs in game design.  Their facilities are state-of-the-art, and their alumni include many of the industry’s most successful artists, designers, developers, and entrepreneurs.”
